What insurance does a makeup artist need?

Whether you're freelance or have formed a limited company, you know your business best. That's why we let you choose only the cover you need to create a completely tailored policy. If you're not sure where to start, here are some recommended covers for makeup artists.

Public liability insurance

Public liability insurance protects you if someone gets injured or has their property damaged because of your work. The nature of your vocation means you're constantly working around people, so this is a popular cover for makeup artists – in fact, 99% of our makeup artist customers buy public liability cover.

Some claims that it covers include:

  • A client developing an allergic to some foundation you've used
  • You accidentally drop some eyeshadow, which stains a cream carpet that needs to be professionally cleaned
  • One of your team accidentally pokes a client in the eye with an eyeliner brush

Employers' liability insurance

Whether it's an apprentice who's learning the ropes to a full makeup team for bigger events, if you employ people – no matter if they're full-time, part-time or temporary – you're legally required to have employers' liability cover in the UK.

It's there to protect the health and safety of your employees, so if they get injured or become ill as a result of your negligence and they make a claim against you, you could be liable. Employers' liability covers the legal and compensation costs associated with those claims.

Business equipment cover

From brushes and palettes to technology and tools, being a makeup artist requires a lot of – sometimes expensive – kit. If some equipment that you rely on to work, such as a phone, laptop or makeup gets damaged or breaks, business equipment insurance can cover the costs to repair or replace it, so you can get back to blending and contouring without missing a beat.

Accident and sickness cover

Accident and sickness insurance comes in three parts to cover workers aged between 16-69.

Firstly, it’s designed to provide financial support for up to 50 weeks if you or an employee goes on long-term sick leave. It can also provide financial assistance for up to 180 nights if you, or an employee, were hospitalised.

And finally, a lump sum benefit of up to £50,000 can be paid out if you or an employee suffers a serious injury or up to £25,000 in the unfortunate event that an insured person dies.

Cyber insurance

Your address book or client database is probably brimming with personal details of customers, such as names, addresses, birth dates and payment information. Well, cyber insurance covers you in the event of data theft, accidentally breaching GDPR legislation or hacking.
